A Taste of Russia in Harbin

A. Harbin is the capital city of Heilongjiang Province, located in the northeastern part of China.
It sits on the southern bank of the Songhua River and is the political, economic, and cultural
centre of the region. The city is situated at a similar latitude to some of the coldest cities in
Russia and Canada, and it lies close to the border with Russia, making it a key hub for
Sino-Russian trade and cultural exchange.
B. Harbin has a humid continental climate with extreme seasonal contrasts. Winters are
notoriously long, freezing, and windy. Heavy snowfalls are common, and the city often
experiences severe cold snaps. Summers are short, warm, and pleasant. The city is famous for
its distinct “Ice City” atmosphere, with the annual Ice and Snow Festival brightening the dark
winter months.
C. A key historical landmark is the Saint Sophia Cathedral, a magnificent Russian-Byzantine style
church built in 1907, which now serves as a museum of architecture and art. Another
significant site is the Central Street, a historic pedestrian street paved with unique cobblestones.
Additionally, the Flood Control Monument, built in 1958, commemorates the city’s fight
against destructive Songhua River floods.
D. During freezing winters, Harbin transforms into a magical ice kingdom. The most famous
activity is visiting the annual Ice and Snow World, where you can admire massive, illuminated
ice sculptures and glide down ice slides. Visitors can also enjoy skiing and snowboarding at the
nearby Yabuli Ski Resort. For a unique cultural experience, many tourists enjoy a dog-sled ride
across the snowy riverbanks.
E. Harbin is renowned for its hearty, Russian-influenced cuisine. The most iconic dish is Harbin
Smoked Sausage (Hongchang), a reddish, garlicky pork sausage with a smoky flavour. Another
favourite is the local version of the Russian bread, “Lieba” – a large, slightly sour, dark brown
bread that is perfect for winter.

Roman's Restaurant Complaint
I rarely complain in restaurants. I usually overlook small problems like slightly slow service
or minor mistakes with orders. But my experience at an expensive restaurant last month was really
terrible. It was my wife's birthday, and I wanted to take her somewhere special. I made a reservation
at a highly rated Italian restaurant in central Moscow that had excellent reviews online.
We arrived exactly at our reservation time, 7:30 p.m. The hostess couldn't find our
reservation in their system. After ten minutes of checking and rechecking, she finally admitted they
had made an error and given our table to someone else. She offered us a table near the kitchen door
instead of the nice window table I had requested when booking. We were already disappointed, but
we decided to stay.
After fifteen minutes, nobody had come to our table. I had to walk over to a waiter and ask for
the menu. When we finally ordered, things got worse. My wife ordered salmon with vegetables, and I
ordered pasta with seafood. The waiter recommended a bottle of expensive Italian wine, which we
agreed to try. The wine arrived quickly – the only fast service we received that evening. We waited for
forty-five minutes for our food. When it arrived, my wife's salmon was overcooked and dry. My pasta
was cold and tasted like it had been reheated in a microwave. The seafood in my pasta smelled strange.
My wife was trying not to cry – her birthday dinner was ruined. I asked to speak with the
manager. I calmly explained everything that had gone wrong: the lost reservation, the slow service
and the quality of the food was poor. Instead of apologising, the manager made excuses: they were
busy, the chef was having a difficult night, mistakes happen. I requested that they remove the food
charges from our bill – we would pay only for the wine. The manager reluctantly agreed. He didn't
apologise or offer any compensation for the ruined evening.
When we got home, I wrote a detailed review on several restaurant rating websites,
explaining exactly what happened. I didn't exaggerate or use angry language – I simply described
the facts. Many people responded to my review, thanking me for the warning and sharing their own
bad experiences of eating out at the same restaurant.
