A. Suzdal is a small town that preserves the atmosphere of medieval Russia better than anywhere
else. Founded in 1024, it was once the capital of a powerful principality. Today, this open-air
museum town has a population of only 10,000 but contains over 200 architectural monuments.
Suzdal features dozens of churches, five monasteries, and the magnificent white-stone Kremlin
with its cathedral.
B. Kostroma, located on the Volga River, was founded in 1152 by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky.
The city played a crucial role in Russian history as the birthplace of the Romanov dynasty.
In 1613, Mikhail Romanov was staying at the Ipatiev Monastery in Kostroma when he was
elected Tsar. The monastery remains the city's main attraction, featuring beautiful frescoes and
a magnificent iconostasis.
C. Yaroslavl, founded in 1010, is the largest city of the Golden Ring with a population
of over 600,000. Yaroslavl flourished as a major trading centre in the 16th-17th centuries, and
its merchants funded the construction of numerous churches featuring elaborate frescoes and
colourful tiles. The city appeared on the 1000-rouble banknote, highlighting its national
importance.
D. Vladimir was the capital of medieval Russia from 1157 to 1389, before Moscow rose to
prominence. Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky moved the capital here from Kiev, making Vladimir
the centre of Russian power. The city's white-stone monuments from the 12th century are
UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Vladimir's period as capital was the golden age of pre-Mongol
Russian culture.
E. Palekh is a small village famous for its unique miniature paintings on lacquered boxes. This art
form developed in the 1920s when former icon painters, after the Russian Revolution banned
religious art, adapted their skills to create secular miniatures. Palekh artists use egg tempera and
gold leaf on black lacquered papier-mâché, depicting scenes from fairy tales, Russian history,
and folk life.

Anton's Apartment Renovation
When my wife and I bought our first apartment, we were excited but also worried.
The apartment was in a good location and the price was reasonable, but it needed major renovation.
The previous owners had lived there for forty years and had never updated anything. The wallpaper
was old and yellow, the bathroom fixtures were from Soviet times, and the kitchen was tiny and
dark.
We decided to do the renovation ourselves to save money. We saved a lot of money, but we
also made many mistakes and the process took much longer than we expected. We spent weeks
looking at design magazines and websites, choosing colours, materials, and furniture. My wife
wanted a modern minimalist style with white walls and wooden floors. I agreed because I trust her
taste in interior design.
We started the renovation in May, hoping to finish by August before our wedding. We
removed all the old wallpaper, which was much harder than we had thought. Some walls had five
layers of different wallpaper! We also had to remove the old floor, which created an incredible
amount of dust. Everything in the apartment was covered with a thick grey layer. Then we hired
professionals for the electrical work and plumbing because these things are too dangerous to do
without proper training. The electrician found several serious problems with the old wiring that
could have caused a fire. We had to spend extra money to replace all the electrical cables. The
bathroom renovation wasn’t easy either. We wanted to install a new bathtub, sink, and toilet, and
put beautiful tiles on the walls and floor. We bought all the materials and started working. But we
didn't measure everything correctly, and we bought tiles that were the wrong size. We had to return
them and order new ones, which delayed everything by two weeks.
By September, we were exhausted and frustrated. The apartment looked worse than before –
there were holes in the walls, no floor in some rooms, and construction materials everywhere.
Finally, in November – three months later than planned – we finished. The result was beautiful and
worth all the effort. Our friends couldn't believe it was the same place.
