A. The Baikal-Lena Nature Reserve, located on the northwestern shore of Lake Baikal, is a strictly
protected area included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Access is heavily restricted, and
visitors must obtain official permits from the reserve administration. The reserve protects
untouched taiga forests, mountain tundra, and the coastline of the world’s deepest lake. It
serves as a crucial scientific site for monitoring climate change. Human presence is minimised
to maintain the wilderness in its purest form, making it a sanctuary for both researchers and the
few lucky travellers who gain entry.
B. For fishing lovers, Lake Baikal is a dream destination. The cold, clean water of the lake is where you
can find the well-known Baikal omul. This delicious white fish is loved by people in Siberia. Other
valuable species include grayling, pike, and sturgeon. Fishing tours operate on a strictly regulated
basis, with seasonal quotas and size limits to protect populations. Most ethical tours practise catchand-release, especially for the endangered sturgeon. This sustainable approach ensures that the lake’s
unique ecosystem remains healthy and that the ancient tradition of Baikal fishing can continue for
generations to come.
C. The tourist complex at Listvyanka Village offers a perfect retreat after a day on the lake.
Visitors can warm up in cosy wooden chalets and enjoy a hearty meal of freshly caught fish,
either smoked over an open fire or served in a traditional fish soup (ukha). Local specialities
also include steamed meat dumplings and herbal teas made from Siberian plants. The complex
hosts festive gatherings for groups, including wedding banquets, New Year celebrations, and
corporate retreats, all with panoramic views of the frozen lake in winter or the bright blue water
in summer. Evenings often feature Buryat folk performances with throat singing and dance.
D. The Baikal Museum of Natural History in Listvyanka is a must-see attraction. Its exhibits cover the
lake’s geology, hydrology, and unique biodiversity. The highlight is the paleontological section,
which displays well-preserved remains of ancient animals that once thrived in the region. Visitors
can admire the full skeleton of a woolly rhinoceros, bones of prehistoric bison, and teeth of the cave
bear, all found on the lake’s surrounding shores. Interactive displays show how these creatures
lived alongside early human settlers, offering a rare window into Siberia’s distant past.
E. Active exploration is the soul of the Baikal adventure. Tour operators offer a wide range of
guided expeditions, from summer hiking along the Great Baikal Trail to winter dog-sledding
and ice-skating on the lake’s crystal-clear frozen surface. Visitors can trek through the KhamarDaban mountains, spot freshwater seals resting on the rocky cliffs, and take refreshing swims in
the lake’s pure waters. For the truly daring, multi-day ice trekking tours with professional
guides teach survival skills, ice fishing techniques, and local ecology. Whether by foot, bike, or
kayak, every journey around Baikal leaves an indelible mark on the soul.
