A Quiet Foggy Place
The Shimanto River in Shikoku is a paradise for active travellers. Tour operators offer canoeing and
stand-up paddleboarding through clear, gentle waters, while more adventurous visitors can go white-
water rafting in the higher parts of the river. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding forests,
leading to hidden waterfalls and panoramic viewpoints over the Pacific coastline. In winter, visitors
can join a guide and walk on snowshoes to the top of Mount Ishizuchi, the highest in western Japan.
The old town of Takayama keeps the skills of Hida’s great woodworkers alive. In small
wooden houses, visitors can see bowls and boxes being rubbed until they shine like glass, and
look at beautiful patterns made of different materials on wooden furniture. They can even try
their hand at paper-making using mulberry fibres. The morning markets feature hand-carved
wooden kokeshi dolls and woven silk fabrics, with elderly craftspeople demonstrating
techniques passed down through twelve generations.
The Kuroshio Sea Museum in Okinawa houses one of the world’s largest aquarium tanks.
It copies the coral reef ecosystem of the Ryukyu Islands. Its most popular exhibit is the fossil
section. There, you can see the fossilised backbones of ancient whales and the huge jaws of
giant prehistoric sharks that once swam in these warm seas. Complete skeletons of giant sea
turtles, dating back over 10,000 years, are preserved alongside interactive touchscreens
showing how these marine titans evolved. The museum also features a life-sized model of a
Jurassic-era plesiosaur, found in the region.
The Oirase Gorge*, nestled in Aomori Prefecture, offers a completely different kind of retreat. This
small valley has bright green moss and tall beech trees. A very cold mountain stream runs through
it. Strict conservation measures limit the number of daily visitors, and wooden boardwalks keep
human impact to a minimum. The gorge is a haven for birdwatchers. In the morning, mist often
covers the waterfalls. This creates a very peaceful and almost magical feeling. All you can hear is
the water flowing and the leaves rustling. This place is a perfect spot for peace and stillness.
* Gorge — yulesbe.
The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage network winds through the dense forests of the Kii Peninsula.
These old routes, recognised as UNESCO World Heritage trails, connect three grand temples —
Hongu, Nachi, and Hayatama. Religious travellers walk on parts of the old stone roads. They
go past very big cedar trees that have special holy ropes around them. Along the way, small
mountain inns serve simple vegetarian meals, and local guides share legends of emperors who
once walked the same trails seeking spiritual purification. The final ascent to the Nachi
Waterfall is considered the most spiritually charged moment of the journey.
