Where Faith Meets History
Must-Try Foods in Lhasa
Gateway to the Himalayas
From Churches to Monuments

A. Lhasa is the capital city of the Tibet Autonomous Region and serves as the political, religious,
and cultural heart of Tibet. The city is more than 3,600 metres above sea level. That makes it one
of the highest cities on Earth. It lies close to the Himalayan mountain range, acting as a place
through which people can get to the region’s unique Buddhist heritage and its historical
connections with Nepal and India.
B. Lhasa experiences a cool, dry climate. Winters are cold, dry, and sunny, with freezing nights but the
weather is relatively mild in the daytime. Summers are cool, rainy, and temperate, with most
precipitation falling during the monsoon season from July to September. The city is famous for its
“Sunlight City” nickname, enjoying over 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, which creates a
brilliantly bright and crisp atmosphere throughout the year.
C. The most iconic historical landmark is the Potala Palace, a vast, fortress-like structure, which once
served as the winter residence of the Dalai Lama and now stands as a museum and UNESCO
World Heritage site. Another central site is the Jokhang Temple, a sacred Buddhist temple, which is
considered the most important temple in Tibetan Buddhism. Nearby, the Barkhor Street, an ancient
pilgrimage route with traditional shops, offers a vibrant and spiritual cultural experience.
D. During the drier months, Lhasa offers a lot of things to do. Pilgrims and tourists alike practice the
ancient tradition of kora – walking around sacred sites, spinning prayer wheels as they go. For a
more adventurous experience, visitors can hike in the surrounding mountains to visit remote
monasteries, where they can witness philosophical debates among monks. Many also travel
beyond the city to climb higher passes for breathtaking, panoramic views of the snow-capped
Himalayan peaks.
E. Lhasa’s cuisine is hearty and influenced by its harsh, high-altitude climate. Tsampa is a popular
dish. It uses roasted barley flour, which is mixed with butter tea and shaped into a dough.
Another favourite is Thukpa, a warm, filling noodle soup with vegetables or meat, which is
perfect for the cold nights. For a unique taste, visitors can sample Yak meat, which is high in
protein, and commonly served dried, stewed, or in dumplings.

Olga's Medical Emergency
I'll never forget the evening when my son got sick. It was an ordinary Thursday in
November. My husband was away on a business trip, and I was home alone with our five-year-old
son, Maxim. We had dinner together, and everything seemed normal. Maxim was playing with his
toys while I was cleaning the kitchen. Around eight o'clock, I noticed that Maxim looked pale and
wasn't playing anymore. I touched his forehead – it was burning hot. I quickly found a thermometer
and checked his temperature: 39.5 °C! I gave him medicine to reduce the fever, but I was worried
because the temperature was very high.
Within an hour, the fever went up to 40 °C. Maxim was confused and kept asking strange
questions. He didn't recognise our apartment and asked where we were. I knew this was serious, so
I immediately called an ambulance. The operator told me to keep Maxim cool with wet towels and
wait for the ambulance. Those fifteen minutes of waiting felt like hours. I tried to stay calm for my
son, but inside I was terrified. When the ambulance arrived, two paramedics came in with their
equipment. They checked Maxim's temperature, blood pressure, and pulse. The doctor said we
needed to go to the hospital immediately. She suspected it might be a serious infection or poisoning
urgent treatment.
At the hospital, doctors examined Maxim thoroughly. They took blood tests and did several
other checks. The diagnosis was acute tonsillitis with complications. Maxim needed to stay in
hospital for treatment with strong antibiotics because it wasn’t a simple cold or an allergy. We spent
three days in the hospital. The doctors and nurses were wonderful – they were professional, kind,
and patient. The antibiotics worked, and his fever came down.
When we finally came home, I felt so grateful to the medical team who helped us. I also
learned an important lesson: never ignore a high fever in children. Quick action and professional
medical help can prevent serious complications. Now I keep a well-stocked first aid kit at home and
I have the children's emergency hotline saved in my phone.
